By booking a Gibraltar Lighthouse experience, you confirm that you have read, understood and accepted these Terms & Conditions.
1. About the Experience
Gibraltar Lighthouse is an active navigational aid owned by Trinity House and managed for public visits by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust. It is also a protected historic monument of significant cultural and architectural importance.
As a working lighthouse, its operational requirements always take precedence over public access. To ensure visitor safety while protecting the historic fabric and operational integrity of the lighthouse, all visitors must comply with these Terms & Conditions and with any instructions given by Gibraltar Heritage Trust staff or tour guides.
To provide the widest possible access, two visitor experiences are available.
Lighthouse Tour Ticket
This ticket includes:
A guided tour of Gibraltar Lighthouse.
A mandatory Health & Safety briefing.
A guided interpretation of the history of Gibraltar Lighthouse and Trinity House.
Access to the upper levels of the lighthouse.
The ascent of 117 steps, including the final steep ladder leading to the Lantern Room.
Time to enjoy the panoramic views from the Lantern Room.
Participation is subject to the health, safety and suitability requirements set out in these Terms & Conditions.
Ground Floor Access Ticket
The Ground Floor Access Ticket provides access only to the Ground Floor Visitor Area and does not include access to the staircase or any upper level of the lighthouse.
This experience has been created for visitors who are unable or who choose not to undertake the climb.
Ground Floor visitors will have access to:
The entrance level of Gibraltar Lighthouse.
Interpretation panels.
Accessible digital displays explaining the history, engineering and operation of the lighthouse.
Audio-visual presentations featuring the interior of the tower, the Lantern Room and panoramic views from the top.
2. Bookings
All visits must be booked in advance through the official booking platform or an authorised ticketing partner.
Full payment is required at the time of booking.
A booking is confirmed only once payment has been received.
Visitors must present a valid booking confirmation (digital or printed) upon arrival.
Tickets are valid only for the date and time shown on the booking confirmation.
Late arrivals may not be admitted.
3. Cancellations and Refunds
Refunds are available only within the published cancellation period.
Gibraltar Heritage Trust reserves the right to postpone, amend or cancel any visit due to adverse weather, operational requirements, maintenance works or health and safety considerations.
Where possible, visitors will be offered an alternative tour or a refund.
4. Visitor Eligibility
Lighthouse Tour
Visitors participating in the Lighthouse Tour must:
Be at least 7 years of age.
Be at least 1.10 metres in height.
Be physically capable of ascending and descending the staircase independently.
Wear appropriate footwear.
Follow all instructions given by the tour guide.
Visitors under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the visit.
A maximum of two children may accompany each responsible adult.
Children, babies and infants must not be carried on the staircases under any circumstances, including in baby carriers, slings or papooses.
Ground Floor Access
The Ground Floor Visitor Area is available to visitors who are at least 1.10 metres in height.
Visitors under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
The Ground Floor Access Ticket does not permit access to the staircase or any upper level of the lighthouse.
5. Health & Visitor Suitability
The Lighthouse Tour lasts approximately one hour and involves climbing 117 steps together with a steep ladder providing access to the Lantern Room.
The tour is suitable only for visitors who are physically capable of safely ascending and descending the staircase without assistance.
The experience is not suitable for visitors with restricted mobility or for anyone unable to negotiate the stairs independently.
Visitors suffering from vertigo, balance disorders, heart conditions, respiratory conditions or any medical condition that may be aggravated by strenuous physical activity are advised not to participate.
Visitors fitted with pacemakers or other implanted electronic medical devices are advised to consult their medical practitioner before booking the Lighthouse Tour, as operational navigation and communication equipment within the lighthouse may generate electromagnetic fields. Visitors with any concerns should consider purchasing a Ground Floor Access Ticket instead.
Visitors who do not meet the participation requirements, or who simply prefer not to climb the tower, are encouraged to book the Ground Floor Access Ticket.
6. Health & Safety Regulations
Visitor safety is our highest priority.
The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has implemented a comprehensive range of operational controls and risk mitigation measures to ensure visitors can safely experience this historic working lighthouse.
These include:
Guided tours only.
Advance booking for all visits.
Limited visitor numbers on every tour.
Mandatory Health & Safety briefings before entry.
Continuous supervision by trained tour guides.
Visitors must remain with their group at all times.
Visitors must use the handrail whenever ascending or descending the staircase.
The staircase must be used in single file.
Running, overtaking or unnecessary stopping on the staircase is prohibited.
Emergency evacuation procedures will be explained before every tour and must be followed at all times.
Visitor numbers within the Lantern Room are strictly controlled.
Entry to and exit from the Lantern Room are managed by the tour guide.
Final Ladder to the Lantern Room
The final section leading to the Lantern Room is via a steep ladder.
For safety reasons:
Visitors must maintain three points of contact while using the ladder.
The ladder must be used one person at a time unless otherwise instructed by the tour guide.
Visitors must ascend the ladder facing forwards.
Visitors must descend the ladder facing the ladder at all times.
Visitors must wait for the guide’s instruction before entering or leaving the Lantern Room.
Tour guides have absolute discretion to refuse admission or terminate a visit where participation presents an unacceptable risk to the visitor, other participants or the safe operation of the lighthouse.
Failure to comply with these safety requirements may result in immediate removal from the tour without refund.
7. Footwear Requirements
For safety reasons, visitors participating in the Lighthouse Tour must wear fully enclosed, flat-soled footwear.
The following footwear is not permitted:
Open-toed shoes.
Sandals.
Flip-flops.
High heels or stilettos.
Bare feet.
Slides.
Crocs shoe style.
Any footwear considered unsuitable or unsafe for climbing stairs.
Visitors wearing unsuitable footwear will not be permitted to participate in the Lighthouse Tour.
Where available, suitable footwear may be borrowed or purchased, although availability and sizes cannot be guaranteed.
8. Protecting the Lighthouse
Gibraltar Lighthouse is both an operational aid to navigation and a protected historic monument. Visitors are expected to treat the building, its historic fabric and its operational equipment with care and respect.
Under no circumstances may visitors:
Touch, lean against or apply pressure to the lantern glazing.
Touch, interfere with or attempt to operate any equipment, machinery or operational systems within the lighthouse.
Touch or interfere with any historic fixtures, fittings or architectural features.
Enter restricted or staff-only areas.
Visitors must remain within the areas designated by the tour guide throughout the visit. Any behaviour that may damage the lighthouse, interfere with its operation or compromise the safety of visitors or staff may result in immediate removal from the tour.
9. Smoking, Alcohol and Prohibited Items
Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere inside Gibraltar Lighthouse.
The use of electronic cigarettes, vaping devices or similar products is also prohibited.
A strict zero-alcohol policy applies to all Lighthouse Tours. Visitors who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be refused entry or removed from the tour.
Open flames, hazardous materials or any item considered to present a safety risk are prohibited.
10. Animals
Dogs and other animals are not permitted inside Gibraltar Lighthouse.
Recognised assistance dogs may be admitted where this can be safely accommodated and where their presence does not compromise visitor safety.
11. Food and Drink
Only small bottles of water may be carried during the visit. No glass will be allowed inside the lighthouse. Food and other drinks may not be consumed inside the lighthouse. Visitors are requested to dispose of litter responsibly and help preserve this historic site.
12. Weather and Operational Conditions
Tours normally operate in most weather conditions. However, Gibraltar Heritage Trust reserves the right to delay, modify or cancel tours where weather conditions, operational requirements, maintenance works or safety considerations make this necessary. Minimum visitor numbers may apply. Where possible, affected visitors will be offered an alternative tour or a refund.
Please note that visibility from the Lantern Room cannot be guaranteed. Gibraltar Heritage Trust accepts no responsibility for reduced or obstructed views resulting from fog, mist, rain, haze or any other weather conditions beyond its control.
13. Photography and Filming
Photography for personal use is permitted unless otherwise instructed by the tour guide. Please take pictures at the designated points, this is for your security.
Commercial photography or filming requires the prior written permission of Gibraltar Heritage Trust.
From time to time, Gibraltar Heritage Trust may photograph or film tours for promotional purposes. Visitors will be informed in advance where appropriate.
14. Liability
Visitors participate in the experience at their own risk. Visitors are responsible for ensuring that they meet the participation requirements before booking and for complying with all safety instructions throughout their visit.
Gibraltar Heritage Trust accepts no responsibility for loss of or damage to personal belongings except where liability cannot be excluded by law.
15. Amendments
Gibraltar Heritage Trust reserves the right to amend these Terms & Conditions at any time. The version published on the official booking website at the time of booking shall apply to that booking.
